Cornhusker Bank is pleased to announce the promotions of Sherla Post to Executive Vice President/Human Resources and Talent Development and Lynda McGill to Vice President, Audit Manager.  “Both of these associates continue to develop themselves and their departments and take on added responsibilities in their areas as the bank continues to grow.  They serve the bank with excellence, a high attention to detail, and commitment.” noted President/CEO, Barry Lockard.

Ms. Post develops and leads all Human Resource Functions, as well as the Human Resource staff for the Bank, including all talent development based efforts.  Sherla collaborates with Management to develop a talent based organization, which cultivates the bank’s culture and operating model.

Ms. McGill leads the bank’s internal audit function and supervises internal audit staff.  Her responsibilities include conducting internal audit risk assessment, determining the annual audit schedule, and coordinating the department’s activities with applicable regulatory agencies and examiners.

Business Email Compromises can happen. Are you ready?


With Business Email Compromise, legitimate business email accounts are either compromised or impersonated, and then used to order or request the transfer of funds. The fraudster will often compromise one of the business’ officers and monitor his or her account for patterns, contacts and information. Using information gained from social media or “out of office” messages, the fraudster will often wait until the officer is away on business to use the compromised email account to send payment instructions.

Avoid Being a Victim

Solid internal controls are key to guarding against these scams.

  • Understand these attacks can come via email, phone calls, faxes or letters in the mail. Don’t assume it’s a cybersecurity problem.
  • Educate and train employees to recognize, question, and independently authenticate changes in payment instructions, requests for secrecy, or pressure to take action quickly.
  • Authenticate requests to make payment or change payment information.
  • Review accounts frequently.
  • Initiate payments using dual controls.
  • Never provide password, username, authentication credentials, or account information when contacted.
  • Don’t provide nonpublic business information on social media.
  • Avoid free web-based email accounts for business purposes. A company domain should always be used to establish company personnel emails.
  • To make impersonation harder, consider registering domains that closely resemble the company’s actual domain.
  • Do not use the “reply” option when authenticating emails for payment requests. Instead, use the “forward” option and type in the correct email address or select from a known address book.
  • Don’t share your credentials with coworkers.
  • Ensure your computer has current Anti Virus/Malware software.
  • Best practice is to have a dedicated computer for performing business banking and financial transactions.

Cornhusker Bank Awards of Excellence Presented to Associates

Cornhusker Bank is pleased to announce its 2018 Awards of Excellence Winners, Jen Baker, and Brian Johnson.  Jen Baker was presented the Golden Apple Award of Excellence and Brian Johnson was presented the 360 Award of Excellence.

The Golden Apple Award of Excellence is presented to the general associate best representing bank standards of excellence.  Ms. Baker serves Cornhusker Bank as Trainer/Retail Recruit Coordinator in our Human Resources Department.  Jen epitomizes the bank’s core values and is a servant leader.  She models the Cornhusker Bank culture not only in her instruction and training but in her daily actions and demeanor.  

The 360 Award of Excellence is presented to a bank officer displaying the highest standards of excellence.  Mr. Johnson serves the bank and its customers as Vice President/ Relationship Manager.   Brian’s nomination for the award noted he consistently goes above and beyond for bank customers.  He will always make himself available when a customer needs help, even if it is not a relationship he normally works with. Brian is quick to share a greeting with any customer or associate he comes across and displays a positive attitude, setting a great example for associates in all departments.  Brian displays the Bank’s core values in his service to customers and to the community at large.

Kellen Completes Commercial Lending Program


Cornhusker Bank is proud to announce Christopher Kellen has recently earned his diploma from the Commercial Lending School in Manhattan, Kansas.   The Commercial Lending School is sponsored by the Kansas and Nebraska Bankers Associations and in partnership with the Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming Bankers Associations.

The school provides bankers intense instruction in the entire commercial lending process.  Barry Lockard, Cornhusker Bank President/CEO, noted, “Chris is a valuable part of our lending team, and the completion of this program has further developed his skills, allowing him to better serve Cornhusker Bank’s customer’s multiple financial needs.”

Lockard Elected to FHLB of Topeka Board of Directors


Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka has announced newly elected members to their board of directors.  Barry Lockard, President/CEO of Cornhusker Bank, is the Nebraska member representative and will serve a term from January 1, 2019 through December 31, 2022.

FHLBank Topeka is a privately owned, federally chartered corporation which promotes housing and homeownership by providing wholesale products, services and programs that help member financial institutions expand the availability of mortgage credit, compete more effectively in their markets and foster strong and vibrant communities. With approximately $51.8 billion in assets and more than $2.4 billion in capital, FHLBank serves 722 banks, thrifts, credit unions and insurance companies throughout Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma. FHLBank is located in Topeka, Kansas.

Congress established the system of home loan banks in 1932 to relieve financial strains on thrift institutions and to promote homeownership.  There are 11 Federal Home Loan Banks located throughout the United States and they are regulated by the Federal Housing Finance Agency in Washington, D.C.

Cornhusker Bank Welcomes Perkins


Cornhusker Bank is pleased to announce the addition of Jay Perkins to its staff as Vice President/Relationship Manager. “Jay’s ability to relate to people will make him an excellent fit with our staff and our concept of developing financial road maps for our customers to help them achieve their goals.  Jay will also be a great representative for the bank in community affairs,” reported Barry Lockard, President/CEO.

Jay has 15 years of banking experience and in addition to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, he holds a Graduate Certificate from the Colorado Graduate School of Banking in Boulder, Colorado.  Mr. Perkins sits on the board for the Child Advocacy Center in Lincoln and is President of the Lincoln Downtown Athletic Club.  Jay noted, “My personal passion for working with teams and building strong relationships with clients fits perfectly with Cornhusker Bank’s culture and commitment to helping both our clients and our associates reach their goals.”

Cornhusker Bank Institutes Emerging Leaders Program


Cornhusker Bank recently launched an Emerging Leader Program.  The program was created in-house to utilize the bank’s operating model, beliefs and values, with an emphasis on servant leadership.  The robust curriculum includes MBA and PhD level content and is applicable to all levels of emerging leaders throughout the bank.

Cornhusker Bank’s Kids Carnival Draws a Crowd from the Community


The annual Cornhusker Bank Kids Connection Carnival was held on August 18th and drew a large crowd.  The carnival is open to the entire community and is totally free to attendees.  When Cornhusker Bank began the event eight years ago, it was conceptualized to help give kids a positive and “fun” experience with banking, in the hope financial literacy would be easier for families to encourage as youngsters grow.  Some banking and financial concepts are introduced at the carnival with a financial workbook activity and an attraction that features on-line games, which can be found on the bank’s website at any time.

The main point of emphasis of the carnival is kids having a good experience provided by bankers.  Most of the carnival type games are manned by Cornhusker Bank associates, who generously give of their weekend time to help with the event.  Carissa Bullock, VP/Marketing and lead organizer of the event reported, “The bank’s creative team and our staff volunteers for the event demonstrated core Bank values of “living life together” and “providing a WOW experience”.  Bank staff embraces this carnival as a way to further enhance relationships in our community.”   Games, which included prizes, ranged from a Lollipop Tree, Limbo, Frisbee Tic-Tac-Toe, a Putt Putt Golf Hole, Corn Toss, Plinko, Fishing Pond,  Ladder Ball, a Bouncy Obstacle Course from Party Inflators, and a Photo Booth in which kids were encouraged to have their pictures taken with the bank’s own superheroes, Penny Wise and Super Bill.

Also part of the carnival were interactions with live animals provided by Lincoln Childrens Zoo and introduction to two dogs and their handlers from Domesti-Pups, informing youth how they assist people daily.   Carnival goers also enjoyed free hot dogs, potato chips and bottled water, catered by 84th and Holdrege Street Hy-Vee and free Sweet Baby J’s Tropical Sno, snow cones.

Youth safety is also a component at the carnival.  The Nebraska State Patrol was on hand to do child fingerprinting ID cards for kids.  Safe Kids interacted with the youngsters promoting bike safety.  A representative of the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation provided handouts to attendees regarding water safety.

A Lincoln City Council person in attendance at the carnival was heard telling staff that Cornhusker Bank is appreciated for events like the carnival, which give back to the community.

The Cornhusker Bank Youth Carnival is held annually each August.  The bank’s website will have details of date and times for the 2019 event as it draws close next year.

Christian Heritage and Cornhusker Bank Mirror Commitment to Betterment of Community


In Cornhusker Bank’s quest to form deeper more valuable relationships with our customers, the unique opportunity to help a customer and a cause that affects our community has arisen.  Christian Heritage is a Cornhusker Bank customer founded in 1980 to care for at risk children and families in the state of Nebraska.  Their purpose of “offering hope” to children and families is driven by a deep-rooted calling and belief that children from hard places are worth investing in.  Christian Heritage is currently accomplishing their purpose through Foster Care, Destination…Dad®, and Safe Families for Children programs.  They have positively impacted thousands of children and families over the past 38 years, but know there is still much work to do.

Christian Heritage has partnered with Over the Edge to increase awareness and raise needed funds to sustain invaluable services to children and families.  Anyone who signs up as an “Edger” and personally raises $1,000 on behalf of Christian Heritage will earn the right to rappel from the roof of the Cornhusker Marriott on Saturday, August 11th.  If you are interested in going over the edge, here is how it works:

  1. Follow the orange “sign up” link at  Christian Heritage requires $85 to register and start your fundraising.
  2. After sign up, you’ll have a customized page you can post on your social media accounts in search of friends and family who will help you reach your $1,000 goal.
  3. You’ll have an option to secure your rappelling position by using your credit card as a guarantee.  Please note if you use this option, if you have not reached your $1,000 goal by August 11th, your card will automatically be charged the remainder of any unraised funding to reach your $1,000 minimum.
  4. Again, $1,000 is the minimum to secure your position to rappel.  If you’re able to raise even more, it makes you a bigger hero to the children and families in need!
